The Merchant of Venice
During the 2008 summer season TAM will unveil a new program, Classics in Context, a project
aimed at encouraging discussion of the modern and historical contexts of a classic play. There may be no
better play to begin with than Shakespeare's brilliant and challenging play
The Merchant of Venice. Monmouth favorite Bill Van Horn returns to play the pivotal
role of Shylock, and Jeri Pitcher (The Tempest, Measure for Measure) directs. The cast will include
Mark S. Cartier and Dustin Tucker. Each performance will feature a pre or post show discussion focusing
on an aspect of the play and its context. Partners for this project include Augusta's Temple Beth El
and the Maine Holocaust and Human Rights Center, as well as scholars Jill Rubinson and H.R.
Coursen. The Merchant of Venice runs in repertory from July 25th through
August 22nd.
